SPEAKER BIO:
Lilia Gonzáles-Chávez MA, is a lifelong resident of Fresno California. She was appointed Executive Director of the Fresno Arts Council in 2011 and continues in that position today. Governor Gavin Newson appointed her to the California Arts Council in 2020, where she served as Chair of the Council from 2021 to 2023. Prior to that she was appointed by Governor Jerry Brown to serve on the California State Summer School for the Arts Board. Lilia is a performing artist with over thirty years teaching and performing Ballet Folklorico. With a BA from Fresno State University and a master’s degree from Fresno Pacific University, she has worked in the education, human services and the arts field first as a teacher and advancing through management and leadership positions in public and nonprofit organizations. She is co-founder of Arte Americas, the Latino cultural arts center in Fresno and served as its Director for nearly ten years. She is credited for establishing the City of Fresno Poet Laureate Program. Lilia is the recipient of the Armando Rodriguez Social Justice award, Fresno County Schools Leadership in Arts Award and the Arte Americas Rebozo Award for Community Service.
